Three laser applications that are well-suited for the MiniJewel Laser System

With the launch of our new MiniJewel Laser System, enterprises and organizations are enabled to do more with their applications. Our system incorporates our commercially available MiniJewel laser, with modules that allow for customization to individual application. One of the benefits of the MiniJewel is its compact size. More and more, system engineers are looking for compact laser systems that do not compromise energy. This innovative, compact laser system has a small footprint (140mm x 87mm x 233mm), weighs less than 3.5kg, and is easily customizable. They have an energy of 4mJ at its fundamental output of 1064nm and can be supplemented with optional nonlinear modules for 1064/532nm, 532/355nm or 355/266nm. With its small form factor, it is ideal for mounting to microscopes. Our system comes with modules that will allow the user to control, with our software: energy, firing mode, and frequency. Module options include an X-Y aperture, polarization rotator, camera ports, and a stand-alone smart controller.

Will Bomar, our VP of Sales, explains “The MiniJewel Laser system will allow seamless integration for portable systems such as Ablation, Marking, Micromachining and a wide range of scientific, industrial and other applications”. Because it is more suited for customization, we explore below three well-suited applications for the MiniJewel.

1. Ablation and Marking

In its simplest application, laser ablation is the process by which layers of a solid surface are removed by irradiating it with a continuous, controlled pulsed laser beam without damaging the layers below. Laser ablation is applied in a wide variety of industrial applications. Laser micromachining is now a common method of surface modification and machining; utilizing a broad spectrum of wavelengths, wave forms, and pulse durations. The ability to control the thickness of the removed layer and remove flexible patterns without the additional process of adding a protection layer is both cost effective and time saving.

2. MicroLED Production & Repair

Production of MicroLED displays presents a number of challenges that can be addressed by laser. There are three main types of methodologies in this area that the MiniJewel can be applied to. Laser trimming to remove defective chips, Laser Lift-Off (LLO) to separate the finished LED from the sapphire growth wafer, and Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) to move the micro LED from a donor to the substrate

3. Micromachining

Nanosecond laser pulses are known for producing high-quality and cost-effective results in a vast variety of micromachining processing applications. Micromachining has proven to be to be a technical solution for fabrication requirements and can be found enabling applications from aerospace to medical devices. Scribing, 3D machining, micro-hole drilling, micro-milling, and surface treatment of a variety of materials ranging from metals to plastics are all capabilities of micromachining.

As the MiniJewel grows in popularity due to its high power and small size, its application potential for new and innovative use also grows.
