Laser Processing in MicroLED Manufacturing

November 18, 2019

Since OLED technology was first used in TV displays in 2012, it has been the premium form in display technology. After almost two decades of development, a new generation of LED display technology is beginning to emerge in commercial applications. MicroLED technology features miniature LED arrays, each functioning as a pixel that emits light. As microLED’s modules become smaller and brighter, image quality and response speed improve. Manufacturing microLED displays will produce high contrast ratios and deep blacks, and promises to provide better color, higher contrast and much higher brightness than either LCD or OLED displays all while using less energy.

Although manufacturing costs are still much higher than LCD and OLED displays, major companies like Samsung, Apple, and Sony are significantly increasing their investment in the technology, making it clear that microLED is the next major innovation in the display technology market. Samsung’s “The Wall” shows off the unbelievable capabilities of the new technology and provides a glimpse of microLED’s future potential.

Quantum Composers has positioned themselves as a major laser systems producer for microLED display repair. Depending on the problem at hand, there are a few different processing methodologies used by Quantum Composers for microLED processing:

  • Laser trimming to remove defective chips

  • Laser Lift-Off (LLO) to separate the finished microLED from the sapphire growth wafer

  • Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) to move the microLED from a donor to the substrate.

Our recently published whitepaper, “Opportunities for Laser Processing in Micro/Mini LED Manufacturing,” dives deeper into these methodologies used by Quantum Composers, the benefits of the technology, and the trajectory of microLED for the near future. Download the whitepaper to learn more about microLED and discover how Quantum Composers has become a key laser system partner within this micromachining process.
