Since OLED technology was first used in TV displays in 2012, it has been the premium form in display technology. After almost two decades of development, a new generation of LED display technology is beginning to emerge in commercial applications. MicroLED technology features miniature LED arrays, each functioning as a pixel that emits light. As microLED’s modules become smaller and brighter, image quality and response speed improve. Manufacturing microLED displays will produce high contrast ratios and deep blacks, and promises to provide better color, higher contrast and much higher brightness than either LCD or OLED displays all while using less energy.
Although manufacturing costs are still much higher than LCD and OLED displays, major companies like Samsung, Apple, and Sony are significantly increasing their investment in the technology, making it clear that microLED is the next major innovation in the display technology market.
