A company constantly evolving to meet the demands of a changing high tech marketplace.
Quantum Composers was founded in September 1993 in Bozeman, Montana, an already accelerating high tech center for electro-optic startups in the northern Rocky Mountain Region. Over the next 5 years Quantum developed a foot hold in the electro-optics market place with the design and development of a precision pulse generator line and as a provider of custom laser systems for test and measurement applications.

As the demand for turn-key custom laser systems grew throughout the late 1990’s, Quantum Composers came to the attention of Merchantek, Inc., based in California. Steve Birrelll, now President & CEO, was instrumental in the design of a laser ablation system which led to the merger and eventual sale of this product technology to New Wave Research in 1998.

In 2002, Steve Birrell was approached by another California company, Photon Dynamics, Inc., to design an integrated microprocessor controlled/multi-wavelength laser system for micro machining. In 2004, the development for flat panel display repair once again led to a technology transfer sale to Photon Dynamics.

Creativity, quality and innovation fuel the future growth of Quantum Composers.
Today, Quantum’s employees grow and thrive in an environment where engineering ideas and customer relationships drive R&D and manufacturing. All this is demonstrated in the expansion of Quantum’s precision pulse generator product line into multiple markets, as well as the continuing development of innovative new products and custom systems for the electro-optics and laser industry.

The Quantum Pulse Generation product line comes into focus.
With the growth of the photonic industry from 1999 to 2006 into more mainstream markets, Steve refocuses Quantum Composers' energy into expanding the pulse generator product line from its strong base in electro-optics into more horizontal R&D test and measurement, and process control applications in the electronic, semiconductor, biotechnology, military and aerospace markets.

Quantum Composers continues its legacy of custom product development for the electro-optics and laser industry, designing custom electronics & instrumentation, custom software, and providing design and manufacturing consulting and training services.

Steve Birrell, CEO of Quantum Composers, has over 18 years of laser physics experience developing solid state lasers, control systems and diagnostics for aerospace, medical, and industrial use.

After his graduation from MIT in 1976 with a B.S. in Physics, Steve joined Hughes Aircraft laser division, where, over a 10 year period, he grew to head their Laser Design Group.

Following his entrepreurneal desire to start his own business, in 1987 Steve founded MetaOptics in California. His company designed, developed, and marketed an industry leading Joule meter.

In 1988, Big Sky Laser of Bozeman, MT (now the US division of Quantel) asked him to join their organization as Vice President. Over a five year period, Steve led the company's growth from a three person aerospace engineering firm to a major supplier of custom and OEM laser systems, contributing to Big Sky Laser’s reputation as a quality supplier in the laser industry market place.
