  • Quantum Composers Application White Paper: LIBS

    Lomonosov MSU App PaperTimur Labutin
    Department of Chemistry, Researcher
    Lomonosov MSU

The Chemistry Department of Moscow State University is a world-known center for Chemistry education. Chemistry education at the University started from the year it was founded, 1755. The founder of Moscow University, Michael Lomonosov, was one of the best chemists in his time. In 1755 he established the Laboratory of Chemistry at Moscow University which later evolved into the Department of Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry includes 17 chairs, 83 laboratories.

    Application Abstract
Nowadays Laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) is widely used for direct analysis of environmental samples. Our research work is devoted to developing of single-shot LIBS measurement in order to determine the traces of geochemical markers in soils and sediments. Double-pulse LIBS is used for enhanced sensitivity. The combinations of harmonics (532 nm, 355 nm and 266 nm) of Nd:YAG laser are investigated for best analytical results.

    Setup Information
Radiation of Q-switched Nd:YAG (λ = 532/355/266 nm, the pulse duration τ ≈ 15 ns) and Nd:YALO (λ = 540 nm, the pulse duration τ ≈ 15 ns) is directed at a convex lens by means of system of mirrors. Then beams are focused on a surface of the sample to be ablated in order to form laser plasma. The image of the central part of laser plume was projected in scale 1:1 onto a slit of spectrograph by means of a quartz convex lens. Spectrograph HR-320 in a scheme of Czerny-Turner is equipped with gated ICCD Camera Nanoscan. The work at a gate mode for camera is performed to change the duration of gate width from 100 ns to 10 µs in the time-resolved measurements. Synchronization of lasers (pumping lamps ann q-switches) with camera will be realized by means of Quantum Sapphire 4-channels pulse generator 9214.
